Adopt a Long Ear

Open your home and your pasture to a donkey or mule who's ready for their forever family.

Why adopt from us

Every animal in our adoption program has been vet-checked, hoof-trimmed, and patiently gentled — and we offer lifetime support after they go home.

  • Full medical history, vaccinations, and dental work up to date.
  • Hooves trimmed every 8 weeks while in our care.
  • Halter-trained and accustomed to handling, with a documented temperament profile.
  • Lifetime adopter hotline — call us about anything, any time.
  • If your circumstances change, the animal comes back to us. No exceptions.

What we look for

  • At least one acre of pasture per equine, with secure four-board or no-climb fencing.
  • An existing equine companion. Donkeys are herd animals and don't thrive alone.
  • A run-in shed or barn for shelter from rain, sun, and winter weather.
  • Commitment to annual vet visits, regular farrier care, and dental floats every 1–2 years.
  • A reasonable distance for a home check before placement.

The adoption process

  1. Browse the herd. Visit our Meet the Herd page and find an animal whose story and needs feel like a fit for you.
  2. Submit an application. A short form covering your property, equine experience, and the home you'd be offering. We read every word.
  3. Conversation and site visit. A short call followed by a volunteer visit so we can see the pasture and meet the existing herd.
  4. Match recommendation. Sometimes the animal you applied for is the right fit. Sometimes we'll suggest someone else who'd thrive better with you.
  5. Bring them home. We deliver within a reasonable radius, do a final walk-through, and stay in touch from there.
